MDS COORDINATOR

A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A MDS COORDINATOR

As a MDS Coordinator you will be based at a long-term care facility within the region. You arrive each day happy to work for a practice that gives you the time and support to get real results for its residents. You love the collaborative spirit of the facility where you will work with like minded professionals.

You will bring specialized knowledge of the MDS process and of developmental factors specific to adult and geriatric residents to help effectively plan and deliver the best individualized care for each of the patients whether challenged with orthopedic issues, neurological diseases, or complex medical conditions.

 

You will conduct patient assessments and take the time to really understand their care needs and goals as you complete MDS assessments. You will also bring your knowledge of MDS coding as defined in the RAI manual. You will bring your good communication skills to educate staff on patient specific care plans. As the MDS Coordinator you will be responsible for selecting the correct codes and completing MDS assessments for payment. Your attention to detail is essential to your success, as you keep up-to-date and accurate records. And, your collaborative skills come into play as you play an active role on each patient's interdisciplinary team. After a day of hard work, you feel great about the impact you have made in your patients' lives and to the organization by following the MDS process and maintaining compliance.

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A MDS NURSE COORDINATOR

  • Maintains a current, valid license as an LPN, or RN, BSN preferred, and is in good standing. Possesses strong knowledge of state, federal, and local regulations as they pertain to long-term care.
  • Previous MDS and coding experience required
  • Possesses a minimum one (1) year of experience in Nursing Service Administration. Additional education or experience in such areas of rehabilitative or geriatric nursing is preferred.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age specific developmental factors specific to adult and geriatric residents (i.e., physical, cognitive, and socialization factors) as it applies to clinical reimbursement.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Medicare and Medicaid RUG grouper categories and documentation guidelines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Care Planning process and Medicare/Medicaid rules and regulations.
